Description
PORTSMOUTH HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE
Fort Constitution
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
The first light at this location was nothing more than a lantern hung on a pole. But for over two hundred years, the light at this location has guided mariners safely into harbor----about as long as any lighthouse in the country. The first light was built in 1771, rebuilt and refurbished in 1804, and again in 1877. Finally the current 48 foot bolted iron plate cylindrical structure was built in 1884. When General George Washington visited the light station in 1789, he found it in such poor condition that he summarily fired the keeper. The fort is a wonderful viewing spot for this lighthouse and harbor seals can be seen frolicking just off shore.
