Description
NEW POINT COMFORT
Chesapeake Bay
North Entrance of Mobjack Bay, VA
Built in 1804 on a peninsula guarding the entrance to Mobjack Bay, this lone sentinel is now on an island of riprap. The spit of land, which had accommodated this octagonal sandstone tower, was broken from the mainland in an August storm in 1933. It was one of the first lighthouses in Virginia to become automated in 1930. Built by the same person, Elzy Burroughs, who built the Old Point Comfort lighthouse, this is the third oldest lighthouse on the bay. This light is 58 feet above mean high water and can only be seen best by boat.
