A vintage postcard from 1935 era. As it is a copy of an old postcard reprints should be kept small as the grain of the original paper is evident.
BLOCK ISLAND SOUTHEAST LIGHTHOUSE
Block Island, Rhode Island
Atlantic Ocean
This image of the Southeast Light on Block Island was taken prior to 1993 probably 1935 to 1950, when it was moved inland some 300 feet. As can be seen the erosion of the cliff in front of the light was a monumental problem. However, the setting at that time was definitely spectacular. The light was built in 1875 and although the tower is only 67 feet tall, the cliffs place it a huge 260 feet above sea level. Moving the two thousand-ton lighthouse not only shared a common identity with the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which was moved in 1999, but also shared another outer banks story. The light in current use at this tower is the same one that once graced the Cape Lookout Light in North Carolina.
