Description
The Block Island lighthouse before it was moved away from the cliffs. This image of the Southeast Light on Block Island was taken prior to 1993, when it was moved inland some 300 feet. As can be seen the erosion of the cliff in front of the light was a monumental problem. However, the setting at that time was definitely spectacular. The light was built in 1875 and although the tower is only 67 feet tall, the cliffs place it a huge 260 feet above sea level. Moving the two thousand-ton lighthouse not only shared a common identity with the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which was moved in 1999, but also shared another outer banks story. The light in current use at this tower is the same one that once graced the Cape Lookout Light in North Carolina.

Thanks so much Mary. I apologize my delay in answering but have been out of town and away from all things electronic.

This is a beautiful lighthouse but the first thing I envisioned, well the first couple of things, was why such a beautiful house was built out there by itself. Then I saw that the house and lighthouse sat very high above the sea, so both are safe and it might be a great place to live for peace and quiet rather than in a rowdy neighborhood. What peace and quiet would be found out here for an artist in any medium. I really like what you've captured here. It really made me think. v
