ST. SIMONS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
St. Simons, Georgia
Atlantic Ocean
The first lighthouse at this location was built in 1810; a wooden structure, which eventually succumbed to fires, set by confederate troops when they fled the island in 1862. The current 104-foot tower and dwelling were completed in 1872. The tower still sports the original 3rd order Fresnel lens flashing a white light every minute. The village where this light can be found is a delightfully fun place to visit. A small park along the water, a fishing dock, and many small stores and restaurants along the main street.
