Description
These locks were used back in the day for river traffic, bypassing the rapids seen in the right of the image. This area was known as the end of the low country region of South Carolina and the beginning of the midlands known for the granite that is today still mined in two quarries. Thus the river became rock filled and commercial river traffic ended at Columbia.
