PINEY POINT LIGHTHOUSE
Chesapeake Bay
Piney Point, Maryland
The first lighthouse on the Potomac River was at Piney Point. Constructed by John Donohoo in 1836 for almost $5,000, this lighthouse and keeper’s house is located 14 miles from the mouth of the Potomac on the north side.
The other three remaining lights on the River are Point Lookout Lighthouse in St. Mary’s County, Maryland; Fort Washington in Prince George’s County and Jones Point in Alexandria, Virginia. While no longer in use, there is a small park and gift shop at the site which offers visitors a pleasant view of the lower Potomac. The tower and keepers houses have been restored and offer guests an up close and personal look at a Donohoo brick lighthouse.
