HEREFORD INLET LIGHTHOUSE

This lighthouse, built in 1874, marks the entrance to Hereford Inlet at the southern tip of New Jersey. The dwelling is part one story and part two stories with a square light tower. The tower houses a fourth order lantern and lens some 53 feet above sea level. The light originally was a fixed white signal, but was changed in 1897 to a flashing red and white. The building and grounds are a flower gardener’s delight when visited in spring and the entire area offers the traveler a wonderful respite.
Open to the public and maintaining a small gift shop, this light is a must for lighthouse aficionados. The lighthouse is located near Central and First Avenues in North Wildwood.
