HEAD ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
ATLANTIC OCEAN
BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC
This beacon was deactivated in 1935 after serving the seafarers of the locale for 117 years. This lovely tower is in a garden like setting and can only be reached by ferry from Southport, NC.
The first tower at this location was build in 1796 at a cost of $7,359, which must have been an outrageous sum for the time. The current relic was constructed in 1818 to replace it’s predecessor and was almost lost to erosion in 1883. Viewing this light now, it is hard to imagine beach erosion being that close to the tower which now seems to be “Inland” on the island. Some would say that these old relics have lost all usefulness, given current technology. But in August of 1998, 47 residents broke into this old beauty to take haven from hurricane Bonnie. The romance surrounding these structures continues.
