A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE STATION
Courtesy of the Station promotional pamphlet
“The Indian River Lifesaving Station was built in 1876 for use by the United States Lifesaving Service. This was a government organization created in response to the alarming number of shipwrecks on the American coastline. The building was originally located 400 feet closer to the shore, but a sand dune began to form around the station almost as soon as it was finished. It was moved to its present location in 1877. Government-appointed keepers hired a crew of six local fishermen to serve as surfmen, possessing knowledge of the local waters. These men served primarily in the stormy season of Sept. through April.”
