HOOPER ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Offshore Hooper Island
Chesapeake Bay MD
This Caisson structure was built in 1902 on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It marks shoals west of Hooper Island and is south of Barren Island, MD. It is 63 feet above high water and can be seen flashing a six second white signal for 9 miles. The Eastern Shore stretch of water between Cove Point to Smith Island was and is a very chancy sail for ships of deep draft headed for Baltimore Harbor. This light was to mark those dangerous shoals.
This is one of the few lights built on the bay in the 19th century and marks to end of an era. An era which saw the lighthouse and keeper’s quarters as inseparable. In fact, the beginning of the 19th century was also the beginning of the end of the need for keepers at all. By late century, most lights were automated.
