Built of reinforced concrete in 1958, this is one of the south�s most interesting construction. A form was used and concrete poured in the form. When the concrete was dry, the form was raised and another section was poured until the entire height of 169 feet was completed.
Originally in this location, the entrance to the famed Cape Fear River, two range lights were employed. The taller light was constructed on a tram railway so that it could be moved as the bar marking the river entrance shifted.
From Wilmington, NC the traveler must head south to route 133. Taking that route to its terminus and turning left....the light is a number of miles along the beach on the left side of the road.
I am a professional photographer specializing in lighthouse, maritime, nature and urban photography. I've been published in many national books and magazines, and am the publisher and co-publisher of numerous lighthouse and wildlife posters. I have led a number of tours for the Smithsonian Institution and produced multimedia slide shows for them and others. I have visited and photographed two thirds of all the lighthouses on the east coast, and probably have the image of your favorite. Just ask! I have also written a number of articles published by regional magazines in both Maryland and New Jersey. I sell and lease images to publishers.
