Description
A little digital fog on East Point Lighthouse.
EAST POINT OR MAURICE RIVER LIGHTHOUSE
Delaware Bay
Heislerville, NJ
Built in 1849, this four-story red brick New Jersey structure is a delight for the visitor. Restored by the Maurice River Historical Society, this lighthouse is located at what seems to be the end of the world. If visited during the week, one gets a real feeling of what it must have been like to be a keeper at these desolate sentinels. Surrounded by marsh and little else the visitor is struck by a deep sense of history and isolation.
In the fall, this is also an excellent location to witness the migration of Monarch butterflies. Monarchs are always present during the fall, but cool northwest winds after a cold front can produce large numbers of migrants, particularly in late September and early October. Huge numbers of these delicate creatures mass in this area at this time.
The lighthouse is located on the east side of the Maurice River near the end of East Point Road about 2.5 miles southwest of Heislerville at the edge of the Delaware Bay.
