BRANDYWINE SHOAL LIGHTHOUSE
IN NEW JERSEY
DELAWARE BAY NORTH OF LEWES DE.
The first lighthouse on Brandywine Shoal was a screw pile design built in 1850 with a light 46 above sea level. The current light is a caisson design and built in 1914. In 1851, the original screw pile light housed one of the only three fresnel lenses in the United States. The other two were Navesink and Sankaty Heal Light Station on Nantucket. The original screw pile went the way of others of similar construction....to much ice in the winter and corrosion of the metal pilings. Despite the addition of rip rap to fend off the ice....corrosion was the final culprit and the caisson was built.
